A Unique Approach to Designing Instructional Materials

TEL Library creates and hosts a large collection of lessons focused on concepts taught in a general education curriculum. TEL Library takes a unique approach to the design and delivery of learning materials. Our content and product design philosophies are shaped, primarily, by our mission to build and support affordable learning solutions for a broad spectrum of users: (1) life learners; (2) working professionals; (3) college students, (4) high school students. TEL Library’s content is differentiated by three distinct factors.

Lesson Design
To support our different patrons and product models, we construct stand-alone, Stackable Lessons™ for each concept within a discipline. Each lesson is designed to deliver a self-contained, premium experience that results in engaged learning and student ownership. This same design model allows us to package collections of lessons within unique product wrappers to create textbook replacements, self-paced online courses, or custom curriculum solutions. TEL Library lessons also provide maximum flexibility related to instructional delivery, including support for face-to-face, hybrid, and online models.
Curriculum Design
All content within TEL Library is designed and constructed as part of an integrated curriculum for general education. Our curriculum begins with information scientists who create libraries of key concepts mapped to one or more discipline domain taxonomies. Knowing where content will (or might) be reused across the curriculum allows us to normalize glossary terms, concept explanations, and examples for learning reinforcement. By facilitating the seamless reuse of the same lesson within different discipline collections, our curriculum-design approach provides unique customization options for institutional partners. This is particularly valuable for those institutions who are considering an interdisciplinary approach to their general education courses.
A Software Development Model for Learning Content
TEL Library utilizes a software development model – “write once, run many times, anywhere in the world” – to scale the creation and updating of our modular, high-quality learning content. Our modular lessons are designed as stackable, reusable objects that can be combined with other lessons, regardless of subject and order, without losing coherence or learning efficacy. This templated model supports scalable content authoring, efficient production processes, and both continuous and granular product updates without interruption to instructors or students. Our model also eliminates the need to produce new product editions.
